Book Dr. Mitchell: Billionaires' Club Book 1 (Billionaires' Club Series) Review :

I will be honest, I did not finish the book. I got about 25% in before giving up. I took a chance on this story due to the glowing reviews, but it didn't work for me. I double-checked some of the critical reviews, and they often mention the grammar and editing issues, so I won't rehash those, but I wanted to warn other potential readers about the other aspects of this story that may potentially make it unworthy of your time. The biggest turn-off was how both the leading man and lady's character is developed and reinforced through their interactions with the "toxic" people around them. As in, "look how great she is compared to these bitches" or "look how smart and in control he is next to this moron". That's not a good way to show a character's personality, and even though the author chooses this method, she does it very poorly. As in, it feels staged and false. I find it very hard to believe how entirely toxic the filler cast is, especially considering these sorts of negative interactions aren't really shown. Conversations start normally and then dialogue ends and all of the sudden the group is nothing but bitches because the author said so. Plus, the conversations are so juvenile... And it really irked me that the female lead comes across as so selfish. At the beginning, she is attending the wedding of a distant relative because they helped her father with some heavy medical bills, and she keeps repeating how annoyed she is and how she doesn't want to do it. Oh, she's grateful and all, but BLEH. I wanted to slap her and tell her to shut up already. You can not want to do something because it's awkward but know you should because it's the right thing to do, and not harp on how inconvenient it is for you and how you don't want to do it, "poor me."Secondly, I tend to give romance authors room on descriptors of the "Greek god of physical perfection" that are the male leads, because let's face it...they ALL are. Every time. But this author really goes overboard with that, hammering it home constantly. Not to mention a ridiculous amount of cursing. I don't hate cursing in books, but I generally find an overuse of it immature, especially so when its written outside of dialogue and specified thoughts. And when it's used as often as it is here, it just makes everyone feel so adolescent. On top of it all, there's absolutely no excuse for using WTF! in a novel unless you are showing a text message or online conversation. I don't care how trendy it is, it is absolutely inappropriate for any educated individual to use this as legitimate prose.Thirdly, the leading man did not read like a man to me. He read like a female author's idea of a man, and I found all of his interactions and inner monologues very stilted and strange. The leading lady acted illogically. According to her inner monologue, she's like a deer in headlights with this perfection of a man in front of her, yet all of her dialogue and actions are sassy and in control. As an aside, there was a strange number of good-looking people that surrounded them. The hospital was filled with gorgeous nurses, all the chicks at the wedding were all breath-taking, etc. Finally, there are several inconsistencies and a weird lack of establishing information, and the author glosses over several important story bits and throws time-skips at us to get to "the good stuff" without bothering to confirm if they even make sense. Then were were details that make zero sense in the real world. The plot itself was just peculiarly executed anyway. "Here he is, the man of your dreams! Now he's gone... Here he is again! Walking away... Here he is again! Okay, I'll do him!" all in the span of a day. I just didn't see why this inception level of meetings was necessary.Ultimately, I had to put the book down when we got to the fanfiction trope of sweeping the girl off her feet because she's stupidly stubborn and forcing her to rest in utter luxury because muh man likes to waste money, followed by the tropey and moronic conversation of "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS FOR ME?!"A lot of people enjoyed this book. I am not one of them. But you may be! So please take my review for what it is: my opinion.
This book is filled with typos! Someone needs to proofread and correct them. It's bad enough they make it hard to read and take the reader out of the story. Plot is good. Characters enchanting. The details weak. Sex scenes get repetitive. I like the secondary characters and wish overall there had been more character development. The story is predictable but has good moments. I laughed out loud on the car ride with Ash driving Jake on the freeway. A bit disjointed and hard to follow at times especially with the typos.
