If you are looking for a more in-depth coverage of why Ireland underwent (and continues to undergo) such breathtaking change in a short period of time, you would be best served to look elsewhere. O’Dowd neglects, or barely mentions, important factors such as the economic liberalization begun by Seán Lemass, the impacts of Ireland’s joining the EEC/EU, the results of universal free secondary education, and changing emigration/immigration patterns. The book is eminently readable, but not nearly a complete treatise on the subject. Book is brilliantly written. Amazing how the Catholic Church in Ireland has completely gone downhill from the days I was an altar boy, 1957-1962. In-depth and a fast read.
